 The first production of this specially commissioned adaptation was in 1992 at the Royal Theatre, Northampton, directed by Michael Napier Brown and designed by Ray Lett.

 The story concerns Davy Powlett Jones, a shell-shocked young World War I veteran who is talked into becoming a temporary teacher at Bamfylde School in Devon by the eccentric but wise headmaster, Algy Herries.  

 The play follows Davy over twenty years as he discovers his vocation as a teacher, finds the perfect wife and loses her in a terrible accident, and is slowly healed by the boy he teaches and the influence he has over their lives.  

 When his position is threatened by a new headmaster, Alcock, Davy has to fight to stay on at his beloved Bamfylde.
