Home Front

One of the highlights of Shaun’s career, this epic series was broadcast from August 4th 2014 to November 11th 2018, an essential element of the BBC's World War One commemorations. The core writers, aside from Shaun, were Katie Hims, Sebastian Baczkiewicz and Sarah Daniels, joined later by Mike Walker and Lucy Catherine. Other episodes were written by Richard Monks, Melissa Murray, Georgia Fitch and Caroline Edwards.

Shaun wrote episodes for twelve of the fifteen seasons and was lead writer on series three, six and twelve.

A daily fifteen minute drama,  Home Front followed the activities and struggles of Britain at home.  It was broadcast in three eight week seasons a year, with omnibus editions and weekly podcasts available for download. Each episode was set on the date of the broadcast, one hundred years before.

The Editor and the show’s visionary leader was Jessica Dromgoole, working with a tight team of Allegra McIlroy, Martha Littlehailes and Ciaran Bermingham.  The series was made at BBC Birmingham.

Season One was set in Folkestone, which quickly became the hub through which soldiers went to war and refugees and the wounded returned, the series later had seasons set in Newcastle and Devon.

All episodes are available online from the date of first broadcast and can be downloaded as podcasts.

There is a huge amount of background information and interviews with the actors on the BBC website.

“...the writing is so sharp and effective, not a word wasted, the characters so deftly drawn that I knew at once who these people were, their place in the drama, their hopes and fears, their inner sadness...”
